<!-- START_ABSTRACT --> <p> Pleistocene Epoch - Pleistocene Epoch - Megafaunal extinctions: The end of the Pleistocene was marked by the extinction of many genera of large mammals, including mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, and giant beavers. The extinction event is most distinct in North America, where 32 genera of large mammals vanished during an interval of about 2,000 years, centred on 11,000 bp. On other continents, fewer genera disappeared, and the extinctions were spread over a somewhat longer time span. Nonetheless, they still appear to be more common near the end of the Pleistocene than at any other time during the epoch.
