Measuring outgassing can prevent thermal runaway of batteries

A battery, before undergoing Thermal Runaway, may release specific gases to the environment. There is a chance that by doing proper gas sensing in the vicinity of a battery, it would be possible to detect a thermal runaway before it happens and act on it.

As far as I know, the runaway happens very fast (in the range of the milliseconds) and that is why monitoring the temperature is not a good enough approach to preventing it (once the temperature raises, the runaway is in progress).
