Our data show that many unused patent rights are intended to block other parties; hence,they may hamper subsequent innovations. While unused patents in general may imply a socially wasteful use of R&D and IPR resources, unused blocking patents may also have anti competitive implications “if the main aim and effect of strategic use of the patent system is to decrease the efficiency of rival firms’ production”
