Sometimes it is called branding, building a reputation is the way companies can start gaining the trust of their customers. This is fundamental since Sales are based on trust. One of the purposes of Marketing is to establish this reputation, even among people who have never interacted directly with the company.

Education content for sales is a prime example of how to build a reputation as a thought leader, for example.
